Introduction
Continuing with our American Pharmacists Month features, we are especially excited to celebrate Women Pharmacists Day on October 12th by highlighting the incredible expertise and dedication of the Woman Pharmacists of RxE2.
Today, we sat down with Shavon Singh, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy Services at RxE2, to discuss her diverse career journey, the evolving role of community pharmacists in clinical trials, and her vision for the future of pharmacy technology.
The Path to Patient Care
When asked what inspired her career path, Shavon shared that she had a desire to help people and thought the medical field was the way to do so, leading her to pursue pharmacy.
Her journey has been exceptionally broad, shaping a deep perspective on patient care. Shavon has gained experience across numerous aspects of the field, including working in hospital settings, community dispensing, nuclear pharmacy, industry, and pharmacovigilance. Currently, her work involves collaborating with pharmacies to facilitate clinical trial patient referral.
Enhancing Clinical Trials, Everywhere
Shavon sees community pharmacists playing an increasingly crucial role in making clinical trials more successful. She explains that community pharmacists are enhancing the clinical trial process by connecting potential patients to these opportunities. For patients, this connection provides access to new or alternative treatment options which they might not otherwise know about.
Ultimately, this involvement assists clinical trials in reaching necessary enrollment goals, which in turn “helps bring new treatments to everyone, everywhere”.
Technology: Connecting the Web of Healthcare
Technology is fundamentally changing how pharmacists operate and serve patients today. According to Shavon, technology has been significant in connecting healthcare providers together for the ultimate benefit of the patient. This connectivity allows for enhanced communication and better assessment measures, leading to improved patient treatment.
Looking ahead, Shavon anticipates that technology will further enhance patient care by allowing for better information sharing, enabling pharmacists and other healthcare providers to connect on a level that optimizes treatment from all aspects.
The Essential Role of the Pharmacist
Shavon emphasizes the profound importance of pharmacists within healthcare today. She notes that pharmacists are truly an essential part of the web of healthcare, and their role extends far beyond merely dispensing or managing patient treatment.
Today’s pharmacists contribute in vital ways, including:
- Conducting health screenings.
- Giving immunizations.
- Advising on the safe use of medications.
- Collaborating with other healthcare professionals about patient treatment.
- Ultimately providing patient care.
Shavon concludes that a pharmacist’s contributions to healthcare are essential for achieving optimal patient outcomes.
